Enrico Lübbe
Artistic Director, Manager, Director
Enrico Lübbe has been Schauspiel Leipzig’s artistic director since the 2013/14 season. Previously, he had been head of drama at Theater Chemnitz from 2008 to 2013.
Born in Schwerin in 1975, he studied Communications, Media and Theatre Studies at Leipzig University. Enrico Lübbe was director-in-residence at Schauspiel Leipzig from 2000 to 2004, and at neues theater Halle from 2005 to 2007.
As a freelance director, Enrico Lübbe worked at Schauspiel Köln, Staatsschauspiel Stuttgart, Staatstheater Nürnberg, Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel München, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Berliner Ensemble and Volkstheater Wien among others.
At Schauspiel Leipzig, Enrico Lübbe’s productions since 2013/14 include the world premiere of Richard Yates’ “Zeiten des Aufruhrs”, “Die Schutzflehenden / Die Schutzbefohlenen” by Aeschylus / Elfriede Jelinek, “Die Maßnahme / Die Perser” by Bertolt Brecht & Hanns Eisler / Aeschylus, Ödön von Horváth’s “Kasimir und Karoline”, “Wolken.Heim” by Elfriede Jelinek and “Faust I+II” by Johann Wolfgang Goethe.
Since the beginning of Enrico Lübbe’s directorship, Schauspiel Leipzig has received numerous awards and invitations to renowned festivals both in Germany and abroad, including the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2017 and 2019, Heidelberger Stückemarkt in 2014, 2015 and 2018, Autorentheatertrage Berlin in 2014, 2017 and 2019, Mülheimer Theatertage “Stücke 2014”, “Stücke 2016” and “Stücke 2019” (Mülheim Dramatists’ Awards for Wolfram Höll’s “Und dann” in 2014 and for Wolfram Höll’s “Drei sind wir” in 2016, as well as Thomas Köck’s “atlas” in 2019), the Munich festival “radikal jung” in 2015, the Berlin Theatertreffen der Jugend in 2016 and 2018, the Swiss Theatertreffen der Jugend in 2016, Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and Biennale die Venezia in 2017 and 2019.
He initiated several programmes in the areas of participation and inclusion which have won several awards, including the Prize of the Saxon Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired.
In 2017, Schauspiel Leipzig under the artistic direction of Enrico Lübbe won the 1st Martin Linzer-Theatre Award for an outstanding artistic overall performance of a German-language theatre ensemble.
For several years, Enrico Lübbe has been a successful opera director, too. His productions include the German premiere of Manfred Trojahn’s “Orest” at Staatsoper Hannover, “Wozzeck” by Alban Berg at Oper Erfurt and, in 2018/19, Richard Strauss’ “Elektra” at Oper Bonn. In 2019/20, he will direct a new production of Richard Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” at Oper Leipzig.
