Compania Sincara plays Hamlet

Over the past years, the theatre collective Compania Sincara have become a fixture of Leipzig’s theatre scene and beyond with their theatre mask art and their performing style between tradition and innovation. Their most recent productions were “Die Liebe zu den drei Orangen” and “Turandot”, based loosely on Carlo Gozzi, “Triton – Ein Theatermärchen aus dem Anthropozän” as well as “Don Q”, based loosely on Miguel de Cervantes.

Compania Sincara have contributed to the face of Leipzig’s independent theatre scene for over seven years. They were nominated for the Leipzig Movement Art Prize three times before finally winning it in 2020. Today, the Compania has been joined by more than a dozen artists. At the core of their theatre work are the mask figures of the Compania, weird characters and audience favourites, relatives of Leporello, Punchinello and Scaramouche. Like strangers in strange lands, they study the people around them in different places and just love to tell us what they have learned.

In 2021, Compania Sincara was the first recipient of the newly minted funding programme “Im Dreiklang für Leipzig”, launched by the Cultural Department of the City of Leipzig. This funding programme is intended to allow independent collectives to enter into a two-year cooperation with both a free, institutionally funded art or culture institution and a municipal one, under their own artistic leadership. Within this framework, the Compania has entered a cooperation with Schaubühne Lindenfels and Schauspiel Leipzig with the aim of developing a production with each of them during the 2022/23 season.

And what is the plan for this “Dreiklang für Leipzig”, this “Triad for Leipzig”? Shakespeare. Compania Sincara will play Shakespeare – but with a difference! The company will bring the tragedy about the Prince of Denmark to the floor of Diskothek – told by the mask characters in a comedic way, with a sharp wit and in a new spirit. And in the summer of 2023, the Compania will perform a wild “As You Like It” or “Twelfth Night” – you choose! In any case, this will be a truly Shakespearean year with Compania Sincara, their mask characters and their very own view of the world.
