On the season

In the 2018/19 season ME ME ME ME ME, we will take Goethe’s “Faust” and Kleist’s “Prince of Homburg” as examples for two characters who indulge in their self-realisation or find themselves confronted with the consequences of their very individualism. In TennesseeWilliams’ “Sweet Bird of Youth”, director Claudia Bauer explores the return of two fragile individuals to the place of their youth, two characters who reinvented themselves so often (or have had to) that underneath all of their masks, there is no longer a face – and yet, their core is still not sufficiently concealed.
David Bowie, a man of many masks and iridescent personalities, one of the most eccentric and exceptional artists of our age, left us “Lazarus”, a final, impressive work that – in all its glamour – also shows us the radicalness and abysses of such a life. With Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”, Moritz Sostmann will continue his work with us: A fascinating encounter of acting and puppetry, creating a special theatrical reality all of its own.

And with “Jeder stirbt für sich allein/Die Leipziger Meuten”, we will interrelate two historical events featuring people who took a stand in their communities in an existential manner – at great risk to their own lives, too. By exploring the “Leipziger Meuten”, we will address a specific historical phenomenon of our own city.

At Diskothek, the season will open with “Ännie” by Thomas Melle, a text that finds impressive ways to address social fragmentation, asking what ‘truth’ signifies in this context. Wolfram Höll and Thomas Köck have both written commissioned works for Schauspiel Leipzig and each take very distinct perspectives: Wolfram Höll, taking the venue of the work’s world premiere literally, looks at the microcosm of the disco, while Thomas Köck examines the living conditions of people who were recruited as manpower from Vietnam during the time of the GDR.

At Residenz, various guests and groups will continue their artistic work, such as Interrobang, Planningtorock or Julian Hetzel, but there will also be new artists this season, including the group Barokthegreat, John Moran or Diederik Peeters.
