Residenz
“How would the theatre scene be transformed if all German city theatres were to open a window for independently produced projects, like Schauspiel Leipzig has done with its Residenz venue?” asked the Paris-based performance artist Ivana Müller at a symposium in Salzburg. Indeed, Residenz is unique as a production and performance venue. Nowhere else can independently working artists access the professional support of a city theatre’s operations over extended periods of time to develop and perform their projects.
Starting with the past season, the Residenz-programme has been increasingly open to European artists who brought their various cultural and artistic characteristics to Leipzig. This approach will be continued and extended throughout the 2018/2019 season. In this way, Residenz closes a gap between independent theatre houses and festivals in the city.
Two cooperation projects launched last season will be continued. For the opening, Planningtorock will present “Power House”, a queer musical that calls for the self-empowerment of socially disadvantaged people. In “All inclusive”, Julian Hetzel concludes his investigation of visual warfare and the destruction of images. Two projects will explore ghostly apparitions of our times in very different ways: With its piece “GHOST”, the Italian dance company Barokthegreat looks at the street-dance movement Footwork and extends its ghost like movement vocabulary for the stage. “Erscheinungen (Apparitions)” by Belgian performance artist Diederik Peeters, on the other hand, probes mankind’s dream of immortality on the basis of historical representations of ghosts and visions of the future provided by new technology. Universal forms of human expression are the topics of John Moran’s movement study “Everyone”, merging composition and choreography into a hyper-realistic hybrid. The company Interrobang, well-know at Residenz, are dealing with the great political issues in “Total Therapy”, which takes the form of therapy sessions usually employed for individual psychological complaints.
Introduced last season, NO LIGHTS NO LYCRA was a great success with the audience, so that this season they will once again have the opportunity to take to the Residenz-stage and dance the night away.
