Season 2018/19
Diskothek
Diskothek: A space for reflecting on our present times, a space for experimenting with new writing, a space of opportunities for authors. Diskothek is Schauspiel Leipzig’s dedicated venue for contemporary drama. Following the new construction of the stage, this focus of our programmatic work now has a new location on the ground floor of the Schauspielhaus: a variable black box with room for a wide range of aesthetic signatures.
As a stage for world premieres, Diskothek is a platform for young authors. But the new construction was also an opportunity to set new programmatic emphases and so we have been extending the spectrum since the beginning of the previous season by including already produced plays that warrant another look as well as new voices in contemporary drama from Europe and the rest of the world. Invitations to international festivals for one Leipzig revival and one German-language premiere confirm the productive strength of this expansion.
Dramatists are at the core of Diskothek’s activities and it aims to provide sustainable support for authors. As a consequence, we will present a commissioned work by Thomas Köck in the 2018/2019 programme, whose play “paradies fluten (verirrte sinfonie)” was revived in Leipzig last season. And a commissioned piece by Wolfram Höll will mark this author’s third world premiere in Leipzig.
The Leipzig revival of “Ännie” is an introduction to a new dramatist in the Diskothek-programme: Thomas Melle’s novels and plays are distinguished by their highly ambitious language and have won numerous awards.
The Diskothek-programme goes beyond language-borders with the German-language premiere of “Nacht ohne Sterne”. The play was written in German, but as a work commissioned by the Slovak National Theatre, it was premiered in Slovakian. Following “Die Ermüdeten oder Das Etwas, das wir sind”, this production marks the return of Bernhard Studlar to Diskothek.
What better way to experience the contemporaneity of these authors than to join them at the bar before or after the performances – an invitation to talk and find out about at their writing processes. We want to continue celebrating the new Diskothek-space by turning our opening night concerts into a regular fixture: Following each opening night at Diskothek, there will be free concerts featuring experimental musicians – in the stage areas and sets of the productions!
